As a former Handler and Lead K9 Training Coordinator for a large Colorado police agency, he understands the importance of having a reliable and easy-to-use physical out for your K9 partner. Traditionally, a handler would be forced to apply physical force to the neck area of their K9 until they could no longer breathe so they would release the bite. This can take a few seconds, or sometimes minutes, until the K9 disengages due to a lack of oxygen.  Depending on how motivated the individual K9 is, this process could easily be a longer than acceptable time to disengage. 
 
In addition, this outdated process leads to undue stress and increased risk of injury to the K9, an increased risk of injury to the handler that is having to wrestle their dog off the bite, as well as easily preventing unnecessary and avoidable injuries to the suspect. When you decrease all these likelihoods, you also greatly reduce the likelihood of you or your agency being subject to a sustained civil lawsuit.

The way the bite bar works is even more simple than its design.  The handler places the tip of the bite bar at the back corner of the dog’s mouth. You then run it along the gum of the K9 to the back of the throat, which triggers a gag reflex. During this time, the K9 will release the bite and the handler can then quickly and safely disengage the K9 from the decoy or the suspect and allow officers to move in for the arrest.
 
The Yukon Forge Bite Bar is crafted from 3/8" round stainless steel and then forged to shape. We then oil quench and finish the Bite Bar with a black rubber textured handle to always ensure a good grip.  The applicating tip is rounded smooth to minimize any scraping or injury to your K9 partner’s gums.
